A petition opposing the early release of the individuals responsible for the death of PC Andrew Harper has garnered over one million signatures. The police officer, who was based in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, lost his life in 2019 after being dragged by a car while three teenagers attempted to escape following a quad bike theft in Berkshire.
In 2020, Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers were each sentenced to 13 years for the manslaughter of PC Harper. Despite this, there are plans aimed at easing prison overcrowding that could result in their release next year. The prime minister is currently exploring options to prevent them from being freed prematurely.
The Thames Valley Police Federation (TVP) marked the petition’s significant achievement privately, coinciding with the seventh anniversary of PC Harper’s death on Saturday. The campaign was initiated by Aileen O’Connor, chair of the TVP Federation, who expressed that considering early release for the killers “pours salt into wounds that have never healed.”
O’Connor further described the situation as “an insult to Andrew’s family, his friends, his colleagues and the entire policing family,” and the federation conveyed its gratitude to all those who have shown their support by signing the petition
