Chanel Fong found not guilty after XL bully fatally bit man

A woman has been acquitted of allegations that she owned an XL bully dog responsible for fatally injuring her partner’s father. Chanel Fong, 33, faced charges that she either owned the dog named Cookie or was responsible for the animal at the time of the incident. However, a jury at Caernarfon Crown Court found her not guilty on both counts.

The victim, 62-year-old Keven Jones from Chester, suffered fatal injuries after being bitten on the leg by the dog. Jones bled to death as a result of severe blood loss following the attack. This tragic event occurred before XL Bullies were added to the list of prohibited dog breeds. At the time, Jones had been in poor health and was under medication that thinned his blood. He had been staying at Fong’s residence in Wrexham during May 2022.

During the trial, Fong insisted that Cookie belonged to her partner, Joshua Jones, who was not present during the incident. Despite this, the prosecution argued that Fong shared ownership of the dog. Testimony revealed that the household on Holt Road in Wrexham housed multiple dogs, including two XL bullies named Fire and Rogue. Rogue was Cookie’s mother and was in season during the time, necessitating her separation from the other animals.

The attack happened on the morning of May 23, around 11:30 BST. Keven Jones asked Fong to bring Cookie and another dog inside from the garden, but then was heard shouting at Cookie to “get off” him. Fong also called to the dog to get down. Jones approached Fong “wobbly,” holding his leg which was bleeding heavily. He told her, “he’s got me there.” Although Fong immediately called for emergency assistance and tried to apply first aid, Jones ultimately succumbed to the injuries.
