Video appears to show police chase minutes before fatal A66 crash

Security camera footage seems to capture multiple police vehicles in pursuit of a car just moments before a tragic collision near Middlesbrough that resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, among them two police officers. The recording is believed to have been taken on Lime Road at 03:36 BST on Saturday morning.

Approximately three minutes after the footage was recorded, a Volkswagen Passat was reportedly driving against the flow of traffic on the A66 and crashed into a marked police car. According to the BBC, the police vehicle involved in the crash was not actively involved in the earlier chase, as the pursuit had already ended prior to the collision.

In response to the incident, Cleveland Police made a mandatory referral, prompting the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to launch an investigation into the details surrounding the crash. This investigation aims to clarify the events that led to the fatal accident.
