In 2016, Benzies founded Barb, the same year he departed from Rockstar Games, the developer behind Grand Theft Auto, following a legal dispute over unpaid royalties. The new company initially embarked on developing Everywhere, a multiplayer role-playing game set in a futuristic urban environment. However, the focus later shifted to an action-adventure title named MindsEye.
The project garnered significant attention and attracted substantial financial backing. Company records indicate that by 2024, Barb had secured over £233 million in investment. Despite this impressive funding, former employees have spoken out, describing the development process as lacking clear direction. They also accused the senior management team of ignoring their feedback and concerns during the creation of the game.
After a difficult launch, Barb implemented layoffs affecting between 250 and 300 employees. Around this time, Benzies addressed the staff in a company-wide meeting, claiming that unspecified “internal and external” parties had deliberately interfered with the release of MindsEye. He also pledged to identify and remove any “saboteurs” working within the organization.
When questioned about these assertions, Barb issued a statement taking full responsibility for the game’s initial launch, acknowledging that the released version did not meet the expectations of their player community. Since the launch, the company has struggled to expand its player base despite ongoing patches and additional content.
