Lola Young: Vaping making it harder to breathe, singer says

Vocal coach Hills, who specializes in helping artists improve their singing, emphasizes that vaping can negatively influence an artist’s voice. She explains that difficulty in breathing can put strain on the vocal cords, potentially harming vocal performance.

According to Hills, the impact of vaping extends beyond just the voice box. “Vaping may not affect the voice box just itself, it affects the lungs, the airways, the throat – it’s all respiratory, it’s all connected. So doing that can affect your vocal technique,” she states. She highlights the crucial role breathing plays in singing, noting that it requires controlled inhalation and sustained, efficient exhalation. When breathing becomes compromised, singers must exert more effort to achieve the same vocal quality as before: “You end up trying harder, putting in more effort for the same results you were getting beforehand.”

Beyond the physical consequences, Hills points out the emotional toll that vocal difficulties can take on artists. She remarks, “They can feel like they’ve lost themselves,” indicating how such challenges can deeply affect an artist’s sense of identity and emotional well-being. For this reason, she advises against vaping, especially for performers who rely heavily on their vocal health. “As a performer, as an artist, you want to stay in the best health you can for your voice to work at its best. We all know it’s not the healthy choice and if you can avoid it – absolutely.”

In a related note, singer Young recently made her return to performing after a five-month break prompted by a collapse on stage. She has openly discussed her ongoing battles with health and addiction issues, including past cocaine dependency as revealed in an interview with The Guardian.
