A spokesperson for the palace highlighted ongoing important conversations in various forums about the colonial legacy and the lasting effects of the transatlantic enslavement of African people across generations.
While these issues are largely the responsibility of governments to resolve, the palace reiterated that His Majesty has been clear in his past remarks, referring to the transatlantic slave trade as an “atrocity” that “forever stains our history.” The upcoming royal tour is expected to focus mainly on celebrating the dynamic present and the hopeful future of the nations involved.
Several countries in Africa and the Caribbean have demanded formal apologies and reparations from the nations that profited from the slave trade. In September, Jamaica’s government announced plans to present a petition regarding slavery reparations to the King, who serves as the country’s head of state.
Jamaica’s Culture Minister, Olivia Grange, explained that the petition will request the King to forward three legal questions to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council concerning the legality of the enslavement of Africans in Jamaica. Meanwhile, last month, a spokesperson from Downing Street described the transatlantic slave trade as “abhorrent,” but stated that the UK government maintains its stance against paying reparations
