A former police officer from Merseyside, Ryan Theaker, aged 30, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison, with an additional five years on licence, after being convicted of multiple sexual offences. Theaker was found guilty of rape, sexual assault, and assault by penetration following a trial last month. The incidents took place in a Liverpool hotel room in 2023, and the victim, whose identity remains protected, secretly recorded the attack, which lasted for 82 minutes. Throughout the assault, the woman pleaded repeatedly, telling Theaker to “get off me” over 300 times, as revealed during proceedings at Liverpool Crown Court.
During the trial, it was disclosed that Theaker tried to coerce the victim into allowing him to take naked photographs despite her refusal. He also brought sex toys to the hotel and used them to assault her. The court heard distressing audio recordings capturing the victim’s cries as Theaker continued the attack. Judge Brian Cummings KC described these recordings as “harrowing” and highlighted that Theaker, though off duty at the time, asserted control by saying, “It’ll stop when I say.” Prosecutor Gareth Roberts characterized the attack as a “lengthy and prolonged period of sexual degradation.”
The victim read an emotional personal statement in court, expressing her anguish and disbelief at Theaker’s actions. She said, “I always thought when I was younger that monsters were big horrible nasty creatures who weren’t even real.” Reflecting on her experience, she added, “That is exactly what he is. A monster. The monster never wins.” She questioned how Theaker could have continued his role in law enforcement after committing such acts, stating, “He didn’t deserve to be in the police.” The woman’s statement moved those in the courtroom, though Theaker showed no visible reaction.
Theaker, who lived in Netherton’s Park Lane, was designated a “dangerous offender” by the judge. In his sentencing remarks, Judge Cummings recounted how Theaker forced the victim to wear restraints, took photographs against her will, and used physical force, including grabbing her by the hair to complete the rape. Although the judge acknowledged Theaker’s previous commendations and bravery awards during his policing career, he emphasized the severe impact of the crimes, noting they contributed to the victim’s serious suicide attempt nearly a year after the attack was reported. Following the offences becoming known, Theaker was suspended from duty, resigned before facing misconduct proceedings, and would have been dismissed had he stayed on the force. Merseyside Police Assistant Chief Constable Karen Jaundrill condemned his actions, stating they were “shocked and disgusted” by his behaviour which she affirmed was “in no way representative” of the force
