A tragic incident unfolded in Prestatyn, Denbighshire, where the body of 35-year-old Samantha Natalie Phythian was found inside a burning van on Sunday evening. Authorities have confirmed that Samantha was pregnant at the time of her death. During a court hearing on Friday, it was disclosed that she was still alive when the fire ignited.

Thomas Bell, aged 38 and residing on Wellington Road in Rhyl, appeared at Mold Crown Court facing charges of murder. He has been remanded in custody. The court was informed that Bell knew Samantha, though he denies responsibility for setting the vehicle on fire. In addition, police arrested a 47-year-old local man on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson and possession with intent to supply drugs, linked to the ongoing investigation into Samantha’s death.

Bell attended the hearing via video link and only confirmed his identity. Judge Walters stated clearly that the cause of Samantha’s demise was the fire, emphasizing: “At the time of ignition the person was alive. Someone set the van alight and the person was alive and was killed as a result of the fire.” Bell is scheduled to appear next at Caernarfon Crown Court for a plea and preparation hearing at the end of November, with a trial date provisionally set for early April 2027.

Detective Chief Inspector Zoie Dunkerley of North Wales Police spoke about the progress of the case following the arrest of the 47-year-old man. She remarked, “Our investigations into this incident are moving at pace, and we are currently exploring every avenue of information open to us.” The emergency services responded to reports of the vehicle fire at approximately 23:30 BST on Sunday, with the van located near an industrial estate and retail park in the town center.

In a heartfelt statement, Samantha’s family remembered her as a deeply loved mother, daughter, sister, auntie, and friend. Known affectionately as Sammi, they expressed how much she meant to all who knew her, saying, “No family should ever have to endure the pain of losing a loved one in such circumstances. She will forever be cherished by those who loved her, and she will be deeply missed.
