Teenager’s leg amputated after Barry Island stabbing on bank holiday, court hears

A teenager, aged 17, underwent leg amputation following an unprovoked stabbing incident during a bank holiday visit to Barry Island, as revealed in Newport Crown Court. The boy, whose identity remains confidential due to his age, was with a group of friends at the time the attack occurred in May 2026. The prosecution alleges that Idris Ahmed, a 19-year-old from Riverside, Cardiff, carried out the stabbing after the victim attempted to mediate between two groups prior to the confrontation.

Ahmed faces several charges: one count of grievous bodily harm with intent, one count of inflicting grievous bodily harm, and knife possession. According to the prosecution, the victim and his friends were enjoying the sunny day by drinking and engaging in playful activities such as throwing water and sand. Meanwhile, Ahmed and his friends also arrived at Barry Island, with the two groups eventually coming into close contact near a rocky beach area. One friend of the victim became uneasy as tensions rose between the groups. “The complainant spoke with them and tried to be diplomatic – he was a peacemaker,” explained Nuhu Gobir, the prosecuting lawyer.

Despite an initial handshake between the groups, the court was told that Ahmed suddenly returned and stabbed the boy in the leg without any prior warning. Gobir described the attack: “The defendant approached the complainant from behind, pulled a knife from his shorts and stabbed him to his leg without any warning.” While the victim did not see who stabbed him, several witnesses identified Ahmed, including some who were familiar with him.

Following the stabbing, the boy collapsed and appeared pale, telling those around him, “I am going, I feel myself going.” Ahmed fled the scene, discarding the knife near a nearby building, an action witnessed by someone who later identified him during a police lineup. Before throwing the weapon away, Ahmed was heard saying, “I need to dash this.” A woman nearby captured footage of Ahmed fleeing while she was taking selfies on the beach.

Medical reports from the trial revealed the victim was rushed via air ambulance to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff with severe injuries affecting a major blood vessel in his right leg. One artery was fully blocked, impairing oxygen flow despite multiple blood transfusions. As a result, surgeons had to perform a through knee amputation, removing the lower half of the teenage boy’s leg.

When questioned by police shortly after the event, Ahmed mostly responded with “no comment” and denied any involvement in the stabbing, claiming ignorance about the incident before being released. The prosecution maintains that Ahmed was responsible for the attack and “must have intended to cause him really serious harm by stabbing him to a vital part of his body with such a dangerous weapon,” according to Gobir.

Throughout the trial, the court examined CCTV footage from various cameras near Barry Island Pleasure Park on the day of the stabbing, showing the groups involved. The jury was also presented with an interview with the victim, who described the events leading up to the stabbing. He explained how some female friends had been talking to a large group of boys while sitting on the rocks. Noticing a friend becoming anxious, the victim stepped in to try to defuse tensions, although he did not understand why he himself was stabbed later.

Describing the stabbing, the victim said the sensation felt like “a punch” and that he “knew straight away I had been stabbed.” He noted the pain was sharp but lacked the intense stinging effect one might expect. He also recounted losing and regaining consciousness during his hospital transfer and witnessing a friend being attacked by another person with a plastic shovel. The victim has since undergone four surgeries on his leg. The trial remains ongoing
