Dutch Deputy Prime Minister Bart van den Brink, who also holds the portfolio for asylum and migration, expressed strong concern over recent developments in Dutch territorial waters. He described the situation as “highly disturbing” and noted the migration issue had traditionally been concentrated near Calais before shifting northwards towards Belgium. Van den Brink pointed out that this is the first time such activity has been observed in the Netherlands. Following the incident, Dutch authorities are set to convene to analyze the event and extract lessons for the future.

Bastiaan van Blokland of the Netherlands Red Cross characterized the attempted crossing as both “unusual” and notably unsafe. He detailed how the boat carried 38 people, with some having their legs hanging over the edge amid cold conditions, and operated without an engine. Van Blokland highlighted that these types of movements are rarely seen in the region and expressed surprise at the occurrence. He emphasized that the organization will remain vigilant in monitoring any similar attempts going forward. Meanwhile, police are currently questioning two men on suspicion of involvement in people smuggling.

In the United Kingdom, government officials reported that this summer recorded the lowest number of arrivals by sea since 2020, a period when warmer weather typically contributes to increased crossings. After a pause caused by three weeks of stormy conditions, crossings have recently resumed. Tony Smith, former director general of the UK Border Force, explained that human smuggling networks are adapting by exploring new routes across Europe. He referenced recent launches originating from Normandy, Belgium, and now the Netherlands, moving away from the traditional Dover crossing.

To counteract these evolving tactics, the UK government has been strengthening cooperation with neighboring countries. In October, the home secretary formalized a deal with Belgium’s interior minister, enhancing intelligence sharing to disrupt organized crime linked to migrant smuggling. Nearly 1,050 French officers are currently assisting UK and French border efforts, supported by a new surge team working on Western beaches. A Home Office spokesperson noted that joint international measures have so far prevented over 50,000 crossing attempts and seized 1,100 boats and engines since the last election, while reaffirming commitments to increase enforcement presence abroad and address the factors driving migrants to attempt illegal crossings
