King Charles III and Queen Camilla made a notable appearance at the opening day of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) flower show, which took place for the first time on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. The event is scheduled to last five days and marks a significant occasion as it is the inaugural RHS show on the monarch’s private grounds. As the newly appointed patron of the RHS in 2024, King Charles, alongside Queen Camilla, took part in the award presentations during the event. One of the highlights was the recognition of a creative exhibit named The Queen Bee, featuring tin can bees crafted from recycled containers. This particular display was the work of Ingoldisthorpe Church of England Primary School, located near Sandringham. The Queen personally handed over the Special Award for Upcycled Container Gardens to representatives from the school, praising the exhibit as “absolutely charming” and acknowledging the effort involved.
In addition to the awards, the royal visitors explored the RHS Royal Legacy Garden, a project designed by garden designer Catherine MacDonald in partnership with King Charles himself. The King described the garden as “fantastic,” expressing his approval of the design. Throughout the day, crowds were eager to meet and greet the royals, with many visitors sharing their impressions. This RHS flower show replaces the traditional Sandringham Flower Show, an event historically running since 1881 and organized by a volunteer trust. Under the new arrangement, the RHS will host a horticultural show at Sandringham once every three years. The Sandringham Flower Show will continue independently and is scheduled to return in 2027 and 2028. While some criticisms arose concerning ticket pricing at the RHS event compared to the previous local one-day show, organizers defended the costs as reasonable, with 2026 day tickets priced up to £42, contrasting with the £19 charge in 2025.
