Autistic boy killed after leaping from window, inquest finds

A five-year-old boy named Aalim Ahmed tragically lost his life after falling from the 15th floor of a residential tower in Plaistow, east London. According to the coroner’s narrative conclusion, Aalim, who had autism and was unable to properly assess risks, jumped from a kitchen window in the belief that he could fly. The incident occurred on 16 May 2024, with Aalim dying instantly from the fall. The window, described as one that could tilt and turn, was a focus of differing testimonies during the inquest.

At the hearing, assistant coroner Ian Wade acknowledged that the window involved was “compromised” but found no strong reason for the landlord to have deemed it inappropriate to place Aalim and his family on the 15th floor. An engineer from Newham Council inspected the windows in December 2023 and reported that they were working properly at that time. However, the boy’s mother, Sahra Osman, had expressed ongoing concerns for several months about the windows opening too wide and the lack of a key, fearing for her son’s safety. She described being “horrified” at being housed in the top-floor flat, which needed repairs, and voiced that the council “could have prevented this tragic thing from happening.”

Despite the tragic circumstances, the inquest cleared Newham Council of any blame. Councillor John Gray from Newham Council issued a statement expressing condolences to Aalim’s family and gratitude to the coroner for his detailed examination of the case. Gray referred to the event as a devastating accident and reiterated support for those affected.

During the proceedings at East London Coroner’s Court, the assistant coroner pointed out that the windows were “not used appropriately.” He detailed that Aalim, an active child with autism impairing his judgment on personal safety, had gotten out of bed early on 16 May, climbed onto a chair, and then on the windowsill of the insecure double turn and tilt window in the kitchen. In a moment of naïveté or belief that he could fly, Aalim opened the window and jumped, dying instantly at the scene. Coroner Wade further clarified that the significant issue was the compromised state of the windows rather than the fact that the flat was on the 15th floor, and he decided against issuing any recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths
