Data centres, which house powerful computers supporting various digital services like online banking and streaming platforms, are becoming increasingly prevalent across the UK, driven in part by surging demand related to artificial intelligence (AI). The UK government categorises these centres as critical national infrastructure because most jobs now depend on them, yet concerns persist about their substantial consumption of resources such as electricity, grid capacity, and water, along with their effects on local communities.
One major development is the Vantage Data Center Campus in Newport, spanning 46 acres and set to contain three data centres once completed. Amanda’s main worries focus on the noise pollution, visual intrusion, and potential impact on property values. “Whichever window you look out, you can see it,” she remarked. Her neighbour Anthony added that ongoing construction disrupts the peaceful atmosphere of the area due to increased noise and traffic.
