A representative for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex expressed surprise that the Royal Household had issued a letter clarifying Harry and Meghan’s official status as non-working members of the royal family. The spokesperson noted that the couple “were a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance.”
Despite this statement, insiders from the Royal Family indicate that Harry and Meghan had prior knowledge of the letter before it became public. Meanwhile, it is reported that a Home Office security committee is convening to discuss the potential for taxpayer-funded security now that the family has returned to the United Kingdom.
The letter, sent on behalf of the King by the Lord Chamberlain—a senior official at the Palace—aimed to clarify the Sussexes’ standing following their recent move from California with their children, Archie and Lilibet. According to the letter, Harry and Meghan will continue to be regarded as “private citizens” and will not be entitled to use the titles “His and Her Royal Highness.”
