During the recent Great North Run, two men aged 25 tragically lost their lives after collapsing while participating in the half marathon. The event, which stretches from Newcastle to South Shields, saw these individuals fall ill along the 13.1-mile route on Sunday.
Organisers from The Great Run Company confirmed that both deceased participants were local to the north-east of England. Despite the immediate intervention and efforts of the event’s medical team, attempts to save them were unsuccessful. The precise causes of death have not yet been established and will be investigated further.
A spokesperson from the organisers expressed their condolences, stating, “We are continuing to support their families during this incredibly difficult time, and our thoughts and sympathies are with all those who loved and knew them.” This year marked the 45th running of the event, which attracted around 63,000 runners taking on the challenging half marathon course.
