Man arrested over attacks on Jewish community in London

Police in London have detained a man in connection with a series of attacks targeting the Jewish community, amid an ongoing counter-terrorism investigation. The 37-year-old suspect was taken into custody on Sunday at a location near Barnstaple, Devon, and is currently being questioned at a police station in London. Authorities are treating the case with utmost seriousness, focusing on preventing further violence.

The inquiry stems from recent violent incidents, including an assault on Hatzola ambulances in the Golders Green area on March 23. Since that attack, law enforcement has apprehended 26 individuals in total. Alongside the ambulance assault, other episodes have involved an incendiary container being hurled at a Persian-language media outlet, as well as the appearance of jars containing a non-hazardous substance found in Kensington Gardens. To date, eight suspects have been charged with arson-related offenses, and one individual has been convicted.

An Islamist group believed to have connections with Iran, Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, has claimed responsibility for the ambulance attack and several other incidents across the UK and Europe. These attacks have caused considerable distress within the Jewish community. Sir Ephraim Mirvis, chief rabbi at Kenton United Synagogue—a site recently subjected to a petrol bomb attack—expressed the deep anxiety felt amongst community members. He has appealed directly to the prime minister, urging a firm commitment to eradicating antisemitism and enforcing a zero-tolerance stance.

The Community Security Trust (CST), which safeguards Jewish people in the UK, has publicly thanked the police and the Crown Prosecution Service for their efforts in addressing these disturbing crimes. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police’s counter-terrorism division continues to examine the range of incidents, striving to ensure the safety and security of affected communities
