The tragic death of Katie Simpson has brought to light deep-seated issues of “institutional misogyny” and widespread “systemic failures” within the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). An independent review has emphasized the urgent need for a significant “cultural shift” in the police force. According to the report, the handling of Katie’s case by the PSNI was marked by severe shortcomings, including overlooked warning signs, poor leadership, inadequate decision-making, and an environment that fostered misogyny and complacency, ultimately sidelining Katie’s experience.
Initially, authorities treated Katie Simpson’s death as a suicide. However, charges of murder were later brought against show jumping trainer Jonathan Creswell. Tragically, Creswell took his own life just one day after his trial began. Justice Minister Naomi Long presented the findings of the review to the Northern Ireland Assembly, highlighting the critical failures in the investigation and the broader implications for policing practices.
Dr. Jan Melia, who led the independent review, underscored the dangers of a police culture that tolerates or endorses misogyny, stating that such an environment increases risks to women. The report pointed out that no police officer seriously considered the possibility of abuse or control in Katie’s case. Instead, clear warning signs were dismissed, established protocols were inconsistently applied, and especially, greater weight was given to Creswell’s version of events over Katie’s lived experience.
The investigation also revealed that at least 37 other victims, some as young as nine years old, have stepped forward with allegations of abuse by Creswell. These reports include claims of both sexual and physical abuse. Many of those affected were newcomers to the equestrian community, similar to Katie Simpson.
