King says slave trade a ‘shameful chapter’ that ‘fills my heart with horror’

During the opening of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm) in Antigua and Barbuda, King Charles III addressed the assembly with powerful words regarding the historical legacy of the slave trade. He described this period as a “shameful chapter of history” that profoundly “fills my heart with horror.”
The King acknowledged that while the actions of past generations cannot be undone, it is essential to learn from those historical mistakes. His remarks set a reflective tone for the gathering of leaders and representatives from the 56 member nations of the Commonwealth.
Chogm, which takes place every two years, serves as a platform for member countries to discuss and shape the future direction of the Commonwealth partnership. It provides an opportunity for dialogue on shared goals and collaboration.
King Charles’s speech highlighted a commitment to acknowledging difficult parts of history while focusing on lessons that can help build a more unified and forward-looking Commonwealth community
