A group of seven activists who were part of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters have now returned to the United Kingdom following their deportation. These individuals were among over 422 participants in the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), an initiative designed to challenge the maritime blockade of Gaza by delivering food and medical supplies.

The flotilla, which consisted of more than 50 vessels, departed from Turkey carrying a symbolic shipment of aid. The Israeli government dismissed the mission as a “PR stunt” benefiting the Palestinian armed faction Hamas. Israeli commandos boarded the flotilla west of Cyprus on Monday and Tuesday, detaining the activists and transferring them to Israeli ships before they were taken to a prison facility in Ashdod.

Upon their arrival back in the UK via London Stansted airport, the activists recounted harrowing experiences. Some described being “systematically tortured and abused over two days” while in custody on Israeli vessels and in prison. Among the allegations were claims of sexual assaults and physical beatings. However, these accusations have not been independently verified by the BBC. In response, Israel’s prison service rejected the claims, asserting that all detainees were treated “in accordance with the law,” while the Israeli military affirmed that their orders mandate respectful and appropriate treatment of the flotilla participants.

Several activists shared personal testimonies highlighting the harsh conditions they endured. Katy Davidson, who arrived in London wearing a grey tracksuit—her own belongings reportedly discarded—described tight handcuffs that caused injury and were cruelly tightened by guards. Hannah Schafer, a sailing instructor, said the detainees were held on “two prison ships” during the ordeal. Documentary filmmaker Dáša Raimanová reflected on the experience with a perspective emphasizing broader humanitarian concerns, explaining that while the encounter was frightening, it “was nothing compared to the people of Palestine.” Another participant, Elliott Roberts, recounted being subjected to violence during his detainment and claimed to have sustained a spinal injury without receiving medical treatment. Israeli authorities have consistently denied allegations of sexual assault and severe mistreatment by their forces, reiterating their commitment to proper conduct and promising thorough investigations into any complaints
